When a space is large and open, use furniture to divide it into smaller areas. This makes the living room both functional and cozy at the same time.
Designing a living room is about much more than just choosing furniture and decor. It’s about the atmosphere: ensuring the space has a functional flow, invites relaxation, and feels personal and cozy.
In the living room of the Lakeside House, the starting point for the design was to create solutions that make the high-ceilinged space feel controlled yet approachable and warm. The first impression is created by light: large floor-to-ceiling windows beautifully integrate the changing seasons into the interior design. The high ceilings add a sense of grandeur through decorative moldings and modern chandeliers, while soft textiles, natural materials, and warm-toned flooring bring the desired warmth and coziness to the overall look.
Even if you are only designing one room at a time, stop to consider the views from one room to another – don’t just think about that specific space. This creates a more cohesive and thoughtful home where spaces flow beautifully together.
This space had two focal points – the fireplace and the terrace view of the lake – so the furniture was oriented so that the room feels natural looking in both directions, dividing the space into clear, functional areas. A gathering spot was built around the sofa for enjoying the fire or watching TV, while armchairs in front of the large windows form a quiet conversation nook. With these different areas, the space easily adapts to everyday moments and larger, more formal gatherings, while still maintaining an inviting and cozy atmosphere.
Remember to pay attention to the back of the chairs when they are placed in a clearly visible spot. Like these curved-back chairs, which look beautiful from every angle.
The overall design continues the home’s classic-modern line: light surfaces and natural tones create a frame complemented by thoughtful details. Dark accents and deliberate contrasts provide depth and rhythm, guiding the eye forward and framing the views.
Warm sun-kissed orange and deep forest green in the furniture bring a soft balance to the otherwise white surfaces.
It’s no secret that I love a calm color palette. But the secret isn’t a lack of color – it’s that the colors are toned down to be softer, avoiding overly jarring ‘pop’ moments. The result is a living room where light and airiness meet warmth and coziness – a classically timeless space with a modern twist, designed to withstand time and life.
4 tips for
a successful living room
- Light as the lead – Large windows make the landscape part of the interior while giving a sense of space even to smaller rooms. So, maximize your light source.
- Look toward the ceiling – Don’t forget the potential of the ceiling in interior design. Thoughtful details, such as decorative ceiling beams, make the space feel cozy and draw the eye upward with interest.
- Clear areas – Group furniture into smaller sections based on functional needs. Don’t be afraid to place furniture in the center of the room, and make use of the areas behind sofas.
- Contrast and harmony – Create a harmonious base with one main color of your choice, and highlight it with contrasting colors in a few pieces of furniture that suit the color scheme.
